Magazine Redesign + Layout System

Own Your Space

With the rise of nontraditional lifestyle and design publications, Dwell presses into its its roots to develop a refreshed aesthetic – positioning itself as a thought leader in the lifestyle and design categories.

Insight

The lifestyle and pieces we celebrate revolve around a handful of enduring principles which have resonated with our audience from the start. Strikingly modern design, articulated through sensibility and function is the heart of our pursuit and the framework of the redesign.

Wow, that’s Brutal

The new layout for Dwell is a grid system drawing inspiration from Architectural Brutalism – a style in which imposing structures make large statements while focusing on human flow through a space. In the same way, we wanted striking images and headlines throughout the publication to lead the conversation while giving way to stories that guide readers through an experience of each space.

The type treatment follows suit using large articulated headers complimented by a softer serif body text. In each layout, the reader’s pace and presence on the page is considered – making intention to erase the margins and give each story the space it needs to be fully received.
